The USS Enterprise and the Scimitar collide

The Battle in the Bassen Rift was an encounter between the USS Enterprise NCC-1701-E, assisted by forces of the Romulan Star Empire, against the Reman warbird Scimitar, which was commanded by Praetor Shinzon. The battle itself, fought in 2379, was a fierce engagement between the Scimitar, a unique and heavily armed warbird of Reman origin, and the Sovereign-class Enterprise-E, which was assisted by two Valdore-type warbirds. The battle ended in defeat for the Scimitar only thanks to sabotage from with the Reman ship itself.

After learning of a deception to use Captain Jean-Luc Picard's blood for a complete transfusion for Shinzon, the Enterprise-E broke of communications with the ship. The Enterprise-E found evidence that the Scimitar was armed with a biogenic weapon - a thalaron radiation generator. Although Shinzon managed to capture Picard using the transporter, Picard quickly escaped with the assistance of Data. Once Picard and Data were safely aboard, the Enterprise departed Romulus at maximum warp.

The Battle

The Scimitar pursued the Enterprise-E while cloaked, waiting for the right moment to strike. Shinzon began to physically and mentally deteriorate due to the non-transfusion. Picard realized that Shinzon and the Scimitar had to be destroyed, lest the ship threaten the Federation with its massive weaponry and planet-destroying thalaron weapon.

The Enterprise was ordered to rendezvous with Task Force Omega near the Bassen Rift, where it would have the support of other starships for protection from Shinzon. However, Shinzon planned ahead. With subspace distortions emanating from the Rift disrupting communications with Starfleet, the Scimitar struck.

Firing while cloaked, the Scimitar quickly disabled the Enterprise's warp drive with a single shot and left it stranded, outgunned and unable to call for help. The Enterprise was able to land some hits on the Scimitar by triangulating its weapons fire on any shield impacts, but this only inflicted minimal damage.

With the Enterprise taking heavy damage, all hope seemed lost, especially when two Romulan warbirds decloaked. Hope was restored when a communication from Commander Donatra of the IRW Valdore informed Picard that the Empire considered Shinzon's attacks a matter of internal security and offered to assist in destroying the Scimitar. The three ships were able to inflict additional damage before one warbird was destroyed and the Valdore was disabled.

On the Enterprise bridge, Counselor Deanna Troi was able to triangulate the location of the cloaked Scimitar by telepathically connecting to the Reman Viceroy, Shinzon's second in command.

With the Enterprise's shields buckling, Shinzon ordered a boarding party to transport to the Enterprise with orders to capture Picard. However, the Reman troops were quickly pinned down by the Enterprise security personnel on Deck 29. The Viceroy was ultimately killed in the assault by Commander William Riker. At this time, the Scimitar fired a spread of torpedoes at the Enterprise, destroying the front edge of the ship's bridge, causing an explosive decompression, which killed helmsmen Lieutenant Branson before an emergency force field was erected to seal the hull breach.

With the battle dragging on, the Enterprise was nose to nose with the Scimitar. The Enterprise had depleted her complement of photon torpedoes and phasers were only operating at 4 while the Scimitar's shields were still operating at 70%. In order to stop the Scimitar, Picard was able to covertly order a ram of the enemy ship at full impulse. The resulting collision critically damaged the Enterprise and disabled the disruptors of the Scimitar. As a final act of desperation, Shinzon ordered the activation of the thalaron radiation weapon, and ordered that every living thing on the Enterprise be killed.

Picard selflessly transported to the Scimitar in order to destroy the thalaron weapon, Once on board, the Enterprise's transporters went offline offering the Captain no way back. Picard made his way to the bridge and after having dispatched the bridge crew, a hand to hand battle between Picard and Shinzon began. The Captain was able to kill Shinzon only thirty seconds before the weapon was to be fired. At this point, Data arrived on the bridge after bravely launching himself through space and onto the ship. He placed an emergency transport unit on the Captain and beamed Picard away. Data calmly walked up to the thalaron radiation generator and in an act of heroic sacrifice, fired his phaser, destroying the Scimitar and saving the Enterprise.

The valor with which the Enterprise fought against Shinzon greatly impressed the Romulans, and the Romulans' assistance against the Scimitar impressed Starfleet. Commander Worf noted that the Romulans had "fought with honor" - very high praise coming from any Klingon.
