A Klingon Bird of Prey fires disruptors which cut through the Enterprise's shields
The saucer section of the USS Enterprise collides with the surface of Veridian III
The Battle of Veridian III was a confrontation between the USS Enterprise, NCC-1701-D, and a renegade D12-class Klingon Bird of Prey.
The Klingon Bird-of-Prey, normally a weaker vessel, exploited the capture of the Enterprise's Chief Engineer, Geordi LaForge. With the help of the El-Aurian scientist Dr. Tolian Soran, Lt. Cmdr. LaForge unwittingly provided a video feed from his VISOR after his safe return to the Enterprise. Once LaForge reached engineering, Dr. Soran was able to determine that the Enterprise's shields operated on a frequency of 257.4 megahertz. Once the Bird of Prey matched its weapons to this frequency, they sliced straight through the shields, doing severe damage to the Galaxy class starship.
As the Klingons continued their attack, Commander William Riker and Lt. Commander Worf conferred on D12-class ship weaknesses. Worf was able to correctly point out that the D12s had been retired from service due to defective plasma coils. These coils formed part of the ship's cloaking device. Data informed Riker that if a low-level ionic pulse were to be targeted at the Bird of Prey's plasma coils, it would reset the coil and engage the cloaking device. While the cloak engaged, the shields would drop and the D12 would be vulnerable for a few seconds.
Their plan worked in that initiating the ionic pulse engaged the cloaking device. The D12 was destroyed with a single torpedo from Enterprise.
The Enterprise's victory was short-lived. The Klingon Bird of Prey did an immense amount of damage to the Federation flagship. The magnetic interlocks were ruptured, and moments before efforts were made to repair them, a coolant leak began. The Enterprise was just five minutes from a warp core breach and nothing could be done to stop it.
Riker immediately order the evacuation of the Enterprise crew from the secondary hull to the saucer section. The evacuation was completed with about a minute to spare. The saucer section engaged her impulse engines and soon cleared the secondary hull. However, the warp core breach occurred early and the resulting shockwave impacted the saucer section, causing it to lose attitude control. The saucer section soon lost helm control and hurtle toward the surface of Veridian III.
Data was able to level the saucer section's descent, but it crash landed on the surface and skidded for a few kilometers. Due to the severe damage sustained by the saucer section, it was not salvageable.
